The Biochar Fund was created in 2008 as a social profit fund aimed at tackling some of the most pressing issues in the developing world: hunger, deforestation, access to energy and climate change.

The fund is owned and managed by a social anthropologist, a tropical agronomist, a soil scientist and an economist. The team has a thorough understanding of the socio-economic realities in Central Africa.

We think the key factors that keep the large rural populations there in abject poverty must be tackled at the roots. Only then can truly sustainable social and rural development emerge.

We combine the passion of a social mission with business rigor, innovation and determination. Our projects are economically self-sustaining and cash-flow positive.

It is our belief that ultimately any social profit organisation must strive towards helping communities gain the means with which they can claim full ownership not only of technologies, but of the knowledge needed to bring about autonomously defined social progress.
